Halloween Wreath

I recently saw a Martha Stewart Living magazine with a really neat idea for a Halloween wreath. I've never had a wreath for Halloween, and I love the fun decorations for this holiday. Since I couldn't find the project on the web yet, I decided to take pictures as I created it and share it with you!
You will need a grapevine wreath, plastic snakes, and black spray paint.

First step- spray everything black. Including your hands. Duh.

Flip everything over, making sure to cover all the wreath and snakes. My snakes didn't take the paint very well, so they took more work to cover and remained a little gummy, even after laying in the sun. (Look how dead our grass is! Very appropriate.)

Once dry, bring them inside for assembly. Your finger will probably be cramping up from spraying the entire can of spray paint, so be sure to do physical therapy as needed.

Using the adhesive of your choice, adhere the snakes to the blackened wreath. I used hot glue, which I dislike because of the awkward hot-glue-stringies that result. I found that its easiest to put the glue onto a big branch instead of the snake, then hold the snake into place for a few seconds.

See that stringy crap? Agh.

I used two packages of snakes, minus a couple, so around 12-13 snakes are on this wreath. It's rather creepy, right?

Go put it on your door. I'm not sure if I would have liked it better with glossy paint.... I keep thinking I might! You could always spray it with a sealer too.
The wreath cost me about $2, the snakes $2, and the paint we had on-hand. All in all this is a very cheap and fun Halloween project.
Anybody have any suggestions on something to cover the personalized knocker?

  1. Cute, but I don't think I will be making this project as I HATE HATE HATE those slithery things I can't even say the name of. :)

I saw a wreath on a magazine this weekend that was covered with candy corns. It was really cute too!

  2. You can get rid of much of the stringy glue crap. You need to blow dry them away on a hot setting. Seriously, get out your blow drier and give it a go.

  3. I love it! Why don't you do some modge podge work on the door knocker? Find some cute decorative papers (Halloween for now) and cover it. Can you take it off and spray paint it? If so, I can make your last name with vinyl and send it to you to cover their name. (Peel and stick)

  4. To do something about your door knocker: I adhere a spider to my door bell and attach a small sign that says to press the spider...if you dare. You might want to adhere a sign to say you will answer only of you use the spider to knock. Cameron
